First, how roofing debris is measured: the "square"

Roofers estimate in squares — one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. A 2,000-square-foot roof is 20 squares. Your contractor's estimate almost always states the job in squares, so you rarely have to calculate it yourself. If you do, take the roof's area (adjusted for pitch — a steeper roof has more surface than the home's footprint) and divide by 100.

How much does a square of shingles weigh?

This is where roofing gets deceptive. Industry norms, by material (present as ranges — confirm with your roofer):

  • 3-tab asphalt shingles — roughly 200–300 lbs per square.
  • Architectural / dimensional shingles — roughly 350–500 lbs per square (the most common modern shingle).

  • Slate and concrete/clay tile — very heavy, roughly 700–1,100+ lbs per square.

The formula: squares × weight-per-square × number of layers ÷ 2,000 = tons. For example, a 25-square architectural roof, single layer: 25 × 400 = 10,000 lbs, or about 5 tons. The same roof with two layers is roughly 10 tons — now you likely need a bigger container or a second haul. Layers are the number-one surprise: a tear-off of two or three existing layers can double or triple the weight, and an older bottom layer may be a heavier material, so calculate each layer separately.

  • Up to ~15 squares — a 20-yard handles it comfortably.

A key point: because you hit the weight cap before filling a big box on dense shingle loads, the 20-yard is often the practical upper size for heavy roofing material. When a single container can't safely hold the estimated tonnage, two smaller pulls or a swap-out beats overstuffing one box.

Size up when you're between tiers — headroom is cheaper than an overage. Split very heavy or tile roofs across two pulls. Don't mix other heavy debris like concrete or dirt into a roofing load.
